Carol Schermer, M.D., M.P.H. Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine
Carol Schermer, MD is a Trauma Surgeon who is interested in the dissemination of alcohol screening and intervention programs to trauma centers nationally. Dr. Schermer is a surgeon at an academic Level 1 trauma center. She has diverse clinical interests but her primary research interest is in the opportunistic treatment of patients with alcohol use disorders while they are hospitalized for injury. She currently is conducting research in brief motivational interventions with trauma patients and in training health care providers to perform brief interventions. She is particularly interested in the barriers that keep trauma centers from having routine available services for alcohol and drug disorders. Her efforts to further the dissemination of addressing alcohol issues at trauma centers are at the institutional and the national level with her involvement in the injury prevention and outcomes committees of the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma, the verifying body for trauma centers. She also serves on her State Trauma Advisory Committees and is helping a State senator present a bill to the legislature to use alcohol taxes to help pay for the care of injured patients.
